LA NÒVIA is a music collective based in Haute-Loire, bringing together professional musicians from many different regions covering a large swathe of France (Haute-Loire, Puy-de-Dôme, Rhône, Gard, Hérault et Hautes-Alpes).
The collective is a place of reflection and experimentation around traditional and experimental music.
This plurality of actors - musicians, graphic designer, videographer, sound engineer - creates a strong dynamic and a powerful aesthetic coherence.
Holder of a DNSEP issued by the Regional School of Fine Arts in Valence, Elodie has followed the Toad group since its creation, creating the graphics for the website, posters and record covers. She has been a permanent employee of La Nòvia Collectif since June 2011, working both as production manager and continuing with her graphic design work for the collective.
Active in several experimental ensembles (Orgue Agnès, Kaumwald, Tanz Mein Herz) and as a member of La Nòvia collectif, Ernest hybridizes electronic and acoustic lutheries. As Sourdure he engages with and riffs on the traditional repertoire of the Massif Central, developing an idiosyncratic, personal form of song in both French and in the Occitan language of the Auvergne. His approach straddles the spirit of experimentation, a practice of violin and of song rooted in tradition, and poetic research in Franco-Occitan bilingualism.
As a stage and studio technician he regularly makes recordings and does production work for affiliate groups and artists.
Perrine is a fiddler apprenticed in unique fashion with traditional Irish musicians. She has also spent time studying the music of the fiddlers of the Southern Alps and in Dauphiné with a fiddler farmer in the Lure mountain (Jabron valley). Far from an academic practice, her appproach examines the intersection between traditional and contemporary experimental music. Her collaborations with artists from diverse backgrounds has revealed facets that have broadened her game, her practice and her imaginative approach. Site specific encounters with particular landscapes have fuelled her research orientated towards sound experiment, where the fiddle becomes a vehicle for exploration reaching beyond the conventional field of music. As a soloist and in various groups within La Nòvia collectif her repertoire includes traditional music from the Hautes Alpes and pieces by contemporary composers (Terry Riley, Guilhem Lacroux, Yann Gourdon...) and solo compositions.
Basile has been exploring the music of the Massif Central over a period of ten years, and in particular the music of fiddlers and singers from Auvergne and Limousin. His practice is deeply marked by the powerful expressive qualities of the music, of these regions, where singing, dancing and instrumental practice often become one.
Basile holds the DEM in traditional violin and the DE in traditional music teaching.
Antoine has been playing the guitar since the age of seven, receiving his training at Les Brayauds Cultural Association near Clermont Ferrand and soon after moving beyond the world of traditional music to develop his approach through several very different styles, such as rock or gypsy jazz.
As a guitarist and member of the group Komred for ten years he has adopted a personal style both melodically and as an accompanist. The practice of the tenor banjo has allowed him to deepen his guitar practice by accentuating the percussive side of his melodic playing - the use of effects pedals combined with the natural resonance of banjo drones has found musical expression in the groups Jéricho and Super Parquet.
As a child David studied at the conservatoire, subsequently learning guitar and bass and playing in various groups. From this practice he developed a passion for sound and sound recording and from 2003 he trained in sound techniques. He has been a professional sound technician since 2006, working at trad dances, festivals, shows and with many musicians, and in parallel resumed his studies at the CRD du Puy-en-Velay (CFEM and postgraduate studies in double bass). Since 2008 he is also a bass player (James Van Deek, Da Capo) and double bass player (Lo Radzouka) and in 2013 he joined La Nòvia collectif as sound engineer for the Jéricho group.
David is sound manager for several music festivals (notably Les Basaltiques), he has worked as sound technician for the group Sourdurent since 2019, then Sourdure (solo by Ernest Bergez), and has sound produced for many other projects of the La Nòvia collectif.
Pierre-Vincent Fortunier is a musician, Béchonnet bagpipe (musette) player and violinist. His work is focused on an electroacoustic practice, the electrified sound seeking to express raw, wild forms through minimal language. He has played for 25 years in various traditional music ensembles open to contemporary and improvised practices.
A member of La Nòvia collectif, he plays in the groups Toad, La Baracande, Maintes fois, In C, and De l’errance l’oubli, and as a solo bagpipe performer he experiments with improvisation and accident. He also plays in the psychedelic krautrock group Tanz mein Herz, and in the thunderous Pied Gauche group.
Additionally, as a scenographer and museographer, his work orientates through a process of questioning how sound can be used in exhibitions.
Clément is a self-taught singer and musician living in the Cévennes. Equally at home in the traditional music of the balèti and in the universe of new and experimental music, influenced for example by the American minimalists, he is guided primarily by encounters with other musicians and listening to aural collections of traditional music. He lives his empirical musical experience, enriched by Mediterranean vocal and instrumental practices.
A member of La Nòvia collective, he collaborates on several projects ranging from balèti to concerts, from early to contemporary music, within various groups: Serr/Sere, Serr, Jéricho, Au seuil du vent, L’Autre, Frêne, Sorgues...
Musician composer and sound artist, Yann works with vibration and sound perception as musical mediums. His work concentrates on the observation of acoustic phenomena in dynamic relation to the environment, architecture/landscape.
In parallel, working within La Nòvia collective, he plays the traditional music of the Auvergne on the hurdy-gurdy, approaching this practice by listening to traditional music collections and carrying out research on the repertoire.
He is also a member of the band France (hurdy-gurdy/bass/drums) and notably plays in a duets with Filipe Felizado and Alexis Degrenier.
Throughout these various approaches, his work focuses purely on the qualities of sound.
Guilhem Lacroux plays plucked string instruments in a variety of groups within the La Nòvia collectif, also in Tanz Mein Herz and in several early music ensembles. He studied composition with Denis Dufour at the CNR in Lyon, Robert Pascal and Jean-Louis Florentz at the CNSM in Lyon. He writes regularly for Calliope, voix de femmes - dir. R Théodoresco, Résonance Contemporaine - dir. A. Goudard as well as for the image, for museums and for the stage.
His music is the opposite of arid, it could be described as fluid: expressive, dreamy, cumulative; it rises, leads to abandonment in intoxication and falls like rain, advancing in defiance of the impermeability of genres and registers, always trusting in the thin thread that connects intimate lightness to universal gravity.
Grégoire is a director, cinematographer, editor and photographer. Interested in poetic and experimental forms, in his work as a videographer he collaborates with many artists, leading him to reflect on the articulations between music and image, leaning towards sensory experience.
His documentary Empreinte, co-directed with Jérôme Loisy, focuses on the Ariège osteopath Patrick Chêne who treats humans and animals through overtone singing. Collaborating with Grégoire Couvert he co-directed the film Khamsin which documents the stigmata of Lebanese politics through a look at the experimental music scene of Beirut. The film is celebrated in national and international festivals. The short film Mathilde, co-directed with Jacques Puech and produced by the AMTA (Agence des Musiques des Territoires d’Auvergne), was selected for the film retrospective les Mondes Paysans at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival 2020.
Jacques began learning the cabrette at the age of 7, an instrument which forms part of the musical landscape of southern Cantal, where he grew up. Immersed in oral traditional music on one side and experimental music on the other, he takes the cabrette into the white waters of experimentation, developing a style which expresses the primal, animal sound of the bagpipes. At the age of 26, he decided to become a professional musician and trained in artistic education at CEFEDEM ARA. In Parallel, he developed his singing practice based on the styles of traditional music from the Massif Central and it is as a member of La Nòvia collectif that he opens up to new sound experiences, experimenting with and refining his musical choices. Strongly influenced by his militant experience in popular music at the educational association Les Brayauds-CDMDT63 he has adopted the role of the ‘collecteur’, documenting the musical traditions of the Massif Central by face to face encounters with practitioners as part of his activity at AMTA.
Mana is a violinist singer passionate about the singular timbre of popular traditional music. The sonorous and poetic elements which nurture her sound and inspire her musicality are drawn from the playing of Occitan fiddlers and the Songs of Women.
For 25 years she has woven human and artistic ties through her encounters with dancers and musicians in France and South India.
She currently plays in several formations including Violoneuses and TRADSH, sharing her practice of baléti music and dances with many different audiences.
